80s Hair Tutorial inspired by Madonna/New Wave/Street Style

I collaborated this week with Wella & their new hairstyling line SHOCKWAVES to do a BLAST FROM THE PAST 1980s hair tutorial
(in German with English subtitles)
the 80's were all about mousse & scrunching..
1. wet hair
2. apply copious amounts of mousse
3. scrunch like a mofo
and then bite some chains! grrrrrrr....
you also need a lot of red lipstick...!
(I've always been sorta scared of red lipstick so this video was a great excuse to bust it out)
inspiration for the hair tutorial was taken from the movie "Desperately Seeking Susan" which was the first movie I was allowed to see with friends (i.e. without my mom)
note: this video will really get you into the groove!
I took 2 hours to get ready for the movie and wore lace gloves, a headband made out of panty hose and a crucifix.
My best friend, Vanise, was Catholic and I remember her mom driving us to the movie and being pretty shocked about the crucifix.
My mom (who isn't particularly religious - although in a weird twist of events is actually on a pilgrimage in Spain right now)
sat me down for a talk about the crucifix "situation"
basically she spoke about the power of religious symbols and asked if I wanted to offend people for the sake of fashion. I think my reply was "chill out"

My video shows you this fun madonna french twist (pictured above) and the classic headband/curls combo
80s inspired hair is big time in Berlin right now &
love it
Soooo many cute boys running around with curls/high hair
It's a New Wave invasion
CHECK OUT 80's BERLIN in the Depeche Mode video below...
Love the shots of locals munchin' on curry wurst
(the Berlin Wall makes an appearance as well)
The icon
Ah, Duckie .. a broken heart we could (can?) all relate too ...
CHICKTOPIA version of 80's ...
cobalt blue spandex - YES TO THAT
The Smiths? Probably one of my all time favorites ..
The Go-Go's. I love these girls!
My sister & I would pretend to be the band, alternating between lead vocals and drums..
Extended Version "OUR LIPS ARE SEALED"
CHECK IT OUT!!
so many fond memories
speaking of.. 80s BHB photos are included in the video ;-)

  1. I LOVE THIS POST!!!
Your hair looks INCREDIBLE this way!!!

It's so funny, but I just can't even blow out my hair these days, feels so unnatural when it's done- this look is a perfect blend of styled and natural. And damn do those pics of her get me excited. We're showing Desperately Seeking Susan at the summer festival I'm working on, and I've been badgering people to include a 'costumes' option to the evening. I just want a good excuse to pile on the lace and layers of necklace :)

  4. I love this post, I wear my hair curly in spring/ summer almost all the time (I let it air dry) and I definitely will try shockwaves, thanks for sharing! I´ll let you know what I think about it.

Desperately Seeking Susan was also one of my first movies, and yes, I was a Madonna wanna-be for a certain period of time ;) I also cut my hair like hers in Papa Don´t Preach ;) My parents hated it, I was 11 or 12 yo wearing spandex and lace leggings and diy shirts that said "Boy Toy". OMG, now I know what my Mom was going through ;) xx from Kölle
