ReplyDeletebeen wanting to read Red Earth and Pouring Rain for a while but have been intimidated by the reviews and length. I think I'll start with his "Love and Longing in Bombay" and go from there. xo
ps: singing to yourself isn't guilty :-)
I'm such a fan of Indian literature. They have such a wonderfully sad rich history and I feel that is reflected in their writing. If you wanted to just dip your toes in Arundhati Roy, author of The God of Small Things is a good place to start. Her writing style has often been compared to Salman Rushdie and is really beautiful. I also love Amitav Ghosh, although his works tend to be more simple and intimate.
ReplyDeleteI went on an Indian literature kick a few years ago and The God of Small Things was one of my favorites as was The Death of Vishnu. I was born in New Delhi and the country holds a special place in my heart and in our family. Have not read any Ghosh - will check him out as well....
