Oh ladies. Ladies, ladies, ladies! I apologize for being away for so long. Closing up shop in Berlin was massive and then we embarked on a whirlwind tour through the USA visiting family and friends and now finally - we've arrived. We're here. Our new home in America.
And it's really hard. Super hard.
Everything is new! A new school for my son, new cultural oddities to deal with (why are supermarkets SO FREAKING HUGE? How do I choose a cereal AMONGST 100 DIFFERENT BOXES?!)New accounts to be set up - from banking to driver's licenses to fitness studios. And of course we have to find a house and buy a car.
I'm tired, overwhelmed and sad. I miss Berlin deeply and wonder if we made the right decision. I'm pretending to everyone that "it's great to be here!" but the reality is that I'm scared.
All changes, even the most longed for, have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is a part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter another.

ps: on a lighter note I'm going to a Chinese New Year's Party tomorrow night & hope to film a tutorial for the occasion!

Oh, that is a great quote. Do I ever know how you're feeling. Be patient and gentle with yourself is my only advice. It will take time to adjust. I think it took me close to 11 months to get used to living in Berlin again...and this is my hometown! (Remember: YOU CAN ALWAYS COME BACK! :))
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear from you again, I've missed you! I bet moving is scary, and getting to know all the ways and norms in a new culture is always hard at first. You're very brave to make such a big desicion! I hope you'll find happiness there :) xxx
ReplyDeleteIch wünsche dir alles alles Gute in deiner "neuen-alten" Heimat!!! Ich freue mich scho auf deine kommenden Videos!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful quote. Your feelings of overwhelm and sadness are completely understandable. I would imagine this to be a difficult transition for you and your family. Together you will get through it. I tend to keep things bottled up, and pretend all is well, when I'm screaming and crying inside. Sharing lightens the heavy load. Thanks for sharing with us.
ReplyDeleteWelcome home! I'm sure its overwhelming but good for you for having the courage to do it! A lot of people wouldn't. Where in the states are you?
ReplyDeletethat is such a good quote by anatole france!! i will have to keep that. i haven't moved a whole lot, but i have moved to a new place twice in the last year and it is really hard! i usually feel pretty low for a few weeks and then gradually find i really do like my surroundings. but you are right, you definitely die a little after moving, especially moving from a place you've lived for quite some time. hope you adjust swiftly and you find your niche in your new place! xo
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel. It's hard to leave one home to go to another that's so new. You don't know how things will work out or adjust till usually six months have gone by. Sometimes it all just falls into place earlier than that. I just kept telling myself that home is wherever my family is. :)
ReplyDeleteI also just moved and am wondering the same thing. Love your blog and vlog. Can't wait for more.
ReplyDeleteUGH...I feel so bad for you!=( There is so much to do in Europe, not so much here in the U.S. I was wondering if you were going to feel bad. It will get better... eventually. I missed you though! can't wait for your videos. take care.
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel, I left the warm Spain to come to a cold Berlin...Leaving job, family and friends for a new family (husband, baby, new lenguage, no friends, no understanding)....But I always find the positive side here, and let me tell you that your b/vlog has helped me a lot!!! So go on Baby, go on and you will find your place!!! Just need a little bit more time!!! Viele grüsse!!
ReplyDeletewelcome back to blogworld! we were wondering how you were!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog and I LOVE your hair tutorials!! You make them so easy to follow, and so beautiful and modern at the same time as being vintage. My heart goes out to your for your new move - I moved a year and a half ago to a new state and I cried for about the first month. I hope it gets better for you!
ReplyDeleteHappy to see you're back!
ReplyDeleteIt will get better. Hang in there!
So glad you're back! I hope you can adjust quickly to all the new changes coming your way! You & your family deserve all the best life has to offer you! WELCOME!!!!
